Does anyone know the name of that song that Steve Gaines and his 3 daughter sang around Christmas about Jesus' birth? I can't find anyone who knows the name of it.
Thanks.

When I was a little girl I remember my father playing the piano (he played by ear)and singing with my Papa (an old country Baptist preacher).

Neither could sing very well but I've never heard "Heaven Came Down" that it sounded any sweeter.

My Papa is in heaven now and this is a very fond memory for me.

Oh my! How neat...great idea.

I can just see my sweet grandmother beaming now as she sang, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". She has been gone a long time, but I kept that memory deep in my heart. It was her favorite song. My grandfather donated the land and built the little country church where I attended as a child. He deeded it so that if the church were to ever go Southern Baptist Convention, it would all revert back to the heirs. What a smart man he was! Talk about discernment!!! I never hear this song but what I don't think about her. It is also among my favorites and I love the lyrics.

Integrity,

Does anyone know the name of that song that Steve Gaines and his 3 daughter sang around Christmas about Jesus' birth?

It was called 'Labor of Love' and it can be found on Andrew Peterson's "Behold the Lamb of God" CD.

I hope this helps!

My all time favorite. You shoulda heard my mom play it. Pure Bliss.

Does anyone remember the song Mrs. Rogers used to sing wayyyy back at "old Bellevue"? I remember being in 1st grade (1980 or so) and hearing her sing it and it always stuck with me. "Come on down, Lord Jesus & take us away. Come on down, Lord Jesus, could this be the day."

"He deeded it so that if the church were to ever go Southern Baptist Convention, it would all revert back to the heirs."

Very smart. They could not 'close' the church. Sounds like He knew Charles Frazier. The guy who developed Hilton Head. He gave away land on HH to any protestant church that would build there but the land had to be used for worship or it reverted, too.

I am grateful to my Lord for His sacrifice for me. This song sums up my feelings.

AT THE CROSS

Alas, and did my Savior bleed,
And did my Sov'reign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

Chorus:
At the cross, at the cross
Where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

2. Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity, grace unknown,
And love beyond degree!
Chorus:
3. Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut his glories in,
When Christ the mighty Maker died
For man, the creature's sin.
Chorus:
4. Thus might I hide my blushing face
While Calvary's cross appears,
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt mine eyes to tears.
Chorus:

5. But drops of grief can ne'er repay
The debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord, I give myself away,
'Tis all that I can do.
Chorus:

Amazing Grace was my personal favorite and the only song that I could sing my youngest to sleep with! It is Well, I'll fly away, and Victory in Jesus are special to me too!

Ok, I'll go old school on this one-who remembers Susan Steehl singing "Special Delivery" in the SCT at 70 N. Bellevue.

I'm going Special Delivery
Wrapped up in love
Bound by a promise
Sealed by a dove
and Filled with the Spirit
Carried by Grace
You'll know where I am going by the look on my face

As for hymns:

My Jesus, I Love Thee
Fairest Lord Jesus
Softly and Tenderly
Victory in Jesus

Thank you NASS! I get to tell a story!
My grandfather was a Baptist preacher and was pastor of a little church in Hartford, Arkansas, when I was a small child. Hartford had been the home of the Hartford Music Company, which published a lot of the old southern gospel songs you now hear on the Gaither Gospel Hour. ("I'll Fly Away" is one.)
Not many of those old songs were in the Broadman Hymnal. Most of them, I had forgotten, until...
One Sunday night, when we first started attending Bellevue, Dr. Rogers asked the congregation to stand and sing "Victory In Jesus". He went on to say that the hymn was from the old Hartford Music Company and that it was his favorite. Amazed, I was still pondering that when the words came floating up to the balcony:

"I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How he gave his life on Calvary to save a wretch like me."

Oh, my! What a blessing that song has been in my life.

Becky said...

One of the songs that Joyce Rogers used to sing is "No, Never Alone."
It starts something like this:

"I've seen the lightening flashing,
I've heard the thunder roll,
I've felt sin's breakers dashing,
Trying to conquer my soul.
I heard the voice of Jesus,
Telling me still to fight on.
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone."

That's one to sing to children on a stormy night - or to yourself. =)

Becky said...

Just one more --

"Peace, Be Still" is one of my very favorites. As a child, I thought the words were, "PLEASE, Be STILL!"

Anonymous said...

How about,

"Now the day is over,
night is drawing nigh...
Shadows of the evening
steal accross the sky."

With Dr. Rogers coming to the pulpit to share one last word of Scripture and the encouragement of,

"Now you can go to bed, lay your head on your pillow and sleep well, 'for your Heavenly Father, who watches over Israel, neither slumbers, nor sleeps."

And yes...I do remember Susan Steele signing "Special Delivery"

And, one of my favorite hymns is:

"A Might Fortress is Our God."

When I was a little girl, my favorite was Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
look full on His wonderful face,
and the things of earth will grow strangely dim
in the light of His glory and grace.

I also have tender memories of the first hymns I ever learned to play on the piano--At Calvary, There is a Fountain, Love Lifted Me, and Bring Them In.

As an adult, Great is Thy Faithfulness and Come Thou Fount can bring me to my knees.

I just got out an old hymnal my mother gave me--Oh, so many great songs that I haven't heard in years!

Thanks for this thread--it's been a nice start to my Monday morning! :-)

churchmouse,

If you'll get a Baptist Hymnal, you'll see Dr. James D. Whitmire's name in the credits. What a wonderful legacy of music leaders we've had at BBC.

Remember, Elmer Bailey and Tommy Lane singing together? I thought it was boring as a child, but now it's a precious memory.

Does anyone remember Derek Adams? We went on choir tour together when I was in 10th grade. If Derek didn't faint (he had bad stage fright) before singing a song, he could really belt that out. He's in Heaven now - man, what a cool memory! I miss him! :)

Also, churchmouse, my mom told me that at Easter, her church would sing "Up From the Grave He Arose" and she could never figure out why Jesus was laying in that gravy. (sing the 1st verse softly to yourselves and simile!)

I'm listening to KLOVE right now and "Untitle Hymn - Come to Jesus" is playing. It's the song that played during Dr. Roger's funeral video

Chris Rice
Untitled Hymn (Come To Jesus)
From the album Run The Earth...Watch the Sky

Weak and wounded sinner,
Lost and left to die,
O, raise your head for Love is passing by

Come to Jesus,
Come to Jesus,
Come to Jesus and live

Now your burden's lifted,
And carried far away,
And precious blood has washed away the stain... so

Sing to Jesus ,
Sing to Jesus ,
Sing to Jesus and live

And like a newborn baby,
Don't be afraid to crawl,
And remember when you walk sometimes we fall... so

Fall on Jesus,
Fall on Jesus,
Fall on Jesus and live

Sometimes the way is lonely,
And steep and filled with pain,
So if your sky is dark and pours the rain... then

Cry to Jesus,
Cry to Jesus,
Cry to Jesus and live

O, and when the love splills over,
And music fills the night,
And when you can't contain you joy inside... then

Dance for Jesus,
Dance for Jesus,
Dance for Jesus and live

And with your final heartbeat,
Kiss the world goodbye,
Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory's side... and

Fly to Jesus,
Fly to Jesus,
Fly to Jesus and live

Fly to Jesus,
Fly to Jesus,
Fly to Jesus and live

Ahhhh...what great memories I am reading...and having! My dear grandfather's favorite was "Amazing Grace" because he was saved as an adult and truly was a wretch! I always think of him when I hear it. I "walked the aisle" to "I Surrender All" and every time I sing it I can still feel God pushing me out of that pew and into that aisle! "I Saw the Cross of Jesus" is obscure but the words are stupendous. I can sing "The Old Rugged Cross" or "Victory in Jesus" and know I have worshipped, without even hearing a sermon! I don't feel like Easter if we don't sing "He Lives". And Christmas MUST have a soft singing of "Silent Night" preferably to candlelight. "It is Well" and "Holy, Holy, Holy" are so thought provoking, especially if you know the story behind "It is Well." My VERY favorite is "Blessed Assurance." What encouragement and love. Great stuff! I miss some of these old hymns.......we don't get to sing them enough.

Isn't it interesting how many hymns are tied up in family memories? That will be important to carry on with the children of today......

There's an old English hymn called "Before the Throne of God Above that Selah covered recently. It has a verse that goes

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free.
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.

What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
I have light in my soul for which long I had sought,
Since Jesus came into my heart!

I have ceased from my wandering and going astray,
Since Jesus came into my heart;
And my sins which were many are all washed away,
Since Jesus came into my heart!

I'm possessed of a hope that is steadfast and sure,
Since Jesus came into my heart;
And no dark clouds of doubt now my pathway obscure,
Since Jesus came into my heart!

I shall go there to dwell in that city, I know,
Since Jesus came into my heart;
And I'm happy, so happy, as onward I go,
Since Jesus came into my heart!

Since Jesus came into my heart,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Floods of joy o'er my soul
Like the sea billows roll,
Since Jesus came into my heart!!

Words by Rufus H. McDaniel (1850-1940)

In loving-kindness Jesus came
My soul in mercy to reclaim,
And from the depths of sin and shame
Thro' grace He lifted me.

He called me long before I heard,
Before my sinful heart was stirred;
But when I took Him at his word,
Forgiv'n, He lifted me.

His brow was pierced with many a thorn,
His hands by cruel nails were torn,
When from my guilt and grief, forlorn,
In love He lifted me.

Now on a higher plane I dwell,
And with my soul I know 'tis well;
Yet how or why I cannot tell
He should have lifted me.

From sinking sand, He lifted me,
With tender hand, He lifted me!
From shades of night to plains of light,
Oh, praise His name! He lifted me!

One day when heaven was filled with His praises,
One day when sin was as black as could be,
Jesus came forth to be born of a virgin,
Dwelt among men, my example is He!

One day they led Him up Calvary's mountain,
One day they nailed Him to die on the tree;
Suffering anguish, despised and rejected,
Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He!

One day they left Him alone in the garden,
One day they rested, from suffering free;
Angels came down, o'er His tomb to keep vigil,
Hope of the hopeless, my Saviour is He!

One day the grave could conceal Him no longer,
One day the stone rolled away from the door!
Then He arose, over death He had conquered,
Now is ascended, my Lord evermore!

One day the trumpet will sound for His coming,
One day the skies with His glories will shine;
Wonderful day, my beloved ones bringing,
Glorious Saviour, this Jesus is mine!

Living, He loved me,
Dying, He saved me,
Buried, He carried my sins far away!
Rising, He justified
Freely, forever!
One day, He's coming - O glorious day!!

Loved with everlasting love,
Led by grace that love to know;
Gracious Spirit from above,
Thou hast taught me it is so!
O this full and perfect peace!
O this transport all divine!
In a love which cannot cease,
I am His and He is mine.

Heav'n above is softer blue,
Earth around is sweeter green;
Something lives in every hue
Christless eyes have never seen;
Birds with gladder songs o'erflow,
Flow'rs with deeper beauties shine,
Since I know, as now I know,
I am His and He is mine.

Things that once were wild alarms
Cannot now disturb my rest;
Closed in everlasting arms,
Pillowed on the loving breast.
O to lie forever here,
Doubts are care and self resign,
While He whispers in my ear,
I am His and He is mine.

His forever, only His,
Who the Lord and me shall part?
Ah, with what a rest of bliss
Christ can fill the loving heart!
Heav'n and earth may fade and flee,
Firstborn light in gloom decline;
But while God and I shall be,
I am His and He is mine --
I am His ... and He is mine!

Out in the highways and byways of life,
Many are weary and sad;
Carry the sunshine where darkness is rife,
Making the sorrowing glad.

Tell the sweet story of Christ and His love,
Tell of His pow'r to forgive;
Others will trust Him if only you prove
True, ev'ry moment you live.

Give as 'twas given to you in your need,
Love as the Master loved you;
Be to the helpless a helper indeed,
Unto your mission be true.

Make me a blessing,
Make me a blessing,
Out of my life may Jesus shine!
Make me a blessing,
O Saviour, I pray!
Make me a blessing to someone today!

I love to tell the story
Of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory,
Of Jesus and His love;
I love to tell the story
Because I know 'tis true,
It satisfies my longings
As nothing else can do.

I love to tell the story;
'Tis pleasant to repeat
What seems, each time I hear it,
More wonderfully sweet!
I love to tell the story,
For some have never heard
The message of salvation
From God's only holy Word.

I love to tell the story,
For those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting
To hear it, like the rest;
And when, in scenes of glory,
I sing the new, new song,
'Twill be the old, old story
That I have loved so long.

I love to tell the story,
'Twill be my theme in glory
To tell the old, old story
Of Jesus and His love.

I am not sure what category this would go into...it certainly is not one that we hear in church. Guess it would be inspirational. I dearly love it. I am speaking of the song, He. I play in on the piano a lot and have for years...just at home. I am not a concert pianist...:( As they say...just for my listening pleasure. Nobody else could stand it.

Is this the first song in the history of Creation?

Is this the first live concert mentioned in the Bible?

Exodus 15
1Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying,

I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

2The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.

3The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.

4Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea.

5The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.

6Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.

7And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee: thou sentest forth thy wrath, which consumed them as stubble.

8And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.

9The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.

10Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters.

11Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

12Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.

13Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.

14The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.

15Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

16Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

17Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O LORD, which thy hands have established.

18The LORD shall reign for ever and ever.

19For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the LORD brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.

20And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel [tambourine] in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

21And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

22So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; ...

So send I you to labor unrewarded, To serve unpaid, unloved, unsought, unknown, To bear rebuke, to suffer scorn and scoffing, So send I you to toil for me alone. "As the Father has sent me, So send I you."
So send I you to hearts made hard by hatred, To eyes made blind because they will not see, To spend tho' it be blood to spend and spare not, So send I you to taste of Calvary.
