Rachel's Story - The Risk of Ignoring a "Moral Failure"

David Brown has requested that a story he received from a woman who for privacy purposes calls herself "Rachel" be featured in it's own topic heading. David introduces her to you here...

My dear brothers and sisters:

Much has been said in regards to the handling of this "moral failure." Most of you know I am critical of it.

I am attaching an
email from a hurting family. I received it this morning. I do have permission as you will see to publish it. It will rip your heart out. They are not members of Bellevue as I understand, yet the actions, or rather inactions, of Dr. Gaines have inflicted hurt on them. Every parent should read this and take heed. We must do EVERYTHING we can possibly do to protect our children. Any less is to fail them. And that is not acceptable.

Once again if you SUSPECT abuse you report it, immediately! Not six months later. The subject line in Rachel's email to me was this: "Just another example of how the Pastor's delay has hurt."

Has anyone answered this question:
What did Adrian Rogers know and when did he know it?

He knew nothing of the Paul Williams child molestation. He will be cleared tomorrow night.

Before he died he knew calling Steve was a mistake. He was overheard calling Steve on the carpet while dying in the hospital.

aog,

Yes, and Eli grieved not over his sons, but the ark of the covenant.

hope,
I heard a sermon the other day touching on this subject..about the sin unto death...how we're told not to pray about that..the preacher used Eli as an example....his response when Samuel prophesied his sons death..."It is the Lord, let him do as He pleases."

A Follow-Up Comment on the Pastors Conference at FBCJAX - I am well acquainted with both Mac Brunson and many other key leaders and pastors in the SBC.

Based on my experirence, I fully expect SG to receive an incredible ovation from the crowd - extended applause - and then Mac will detail how poorly he's been treated and that Satan is attacking him. This will be followed by passionate prayers and laying on of hands on his behalf. Sermons will follow at a fever pitch (not from Steve - but others) on the topic - "Touch Not the Lord's Anointed". Semon Illustrations and jokes will be rife with comments directed at the Blogging Community.

At this moment in time, all SBC Mega Church Pastors are watching BBC closely and wondering what may happen at their church if people start looking closely at their financial arrangements. Paige Patterson has his own SWBTS issues brewing in cyberspace that I don't think are going to go away - like they used to.

Anyway - I predict after watching the Live Feed from FBCJAX this next week - supposing they do that again - we will feel led to label the conference's theme as CIRCLE THE WAGONS, BOYS!

Friend, we have had the same experience. Ya know why this happens? Because they all speak at each others conferences and blurb each others books. Gotta save face. And besides, it is easier when another 'annointed' is with you. And the emotion that is uses! O boy!

One would think they do not fear God at all.

Dallas,

I am familiar with BBC, FBC Dallas, FBC Jax... If what you have proposed will happen at FBCJAX's conference does not happen will you appologize? I am just curious. I hear a lot of hot talk on here about a lot of men who have be heroes of our faith. Dr. Jerry Vines, Dr. Homer Lindsay, Dr. Paige Patterson, and Dr. Mac Brunson now. I don't understand why you would so quickly jump to criticize these pastors. I will be the first to admit that Pastor Gaines has made some mistakes. I don't know when however this blog became the anti-SBC mega church blog.

As far as speaking engagements go, who would you have at your conference? A local pastor whom no one has heard from or knows, or a pastor that a majority of people would know? It has nothing to do with an inner ring of conspirators. Beyond that, I plan on attending the Pastors Conference this year as I have for many years past, and some of the speakers this year ARE pastors that are from smaller churches. I wish that before we decided to use this blog as our forum to post all of our frustrations and unproven dirty laundry we would all pray and ask Christ for discernment. Let us be quick to love and slow to condemn.

contagious,
Most anyone who follows the denominational press will quickly see what's valued most in the SBC. I find it interesting that the "voices" that get heard in the convention are mostly mega-church pastors or seminary presidents..everyone else is considered on the "fringe". Personally I detest the marginalization of the masses of unknown, small church pastors who labor faithfully in obscurity, and whose voices unfortunately will never be heard above the din of the elite "names" in the convention, even though the churches where they labor make up the larger part of the denomination...who would we want to hear?...well we've heard nothing BUT the names you've mentioned for years on end now..what's new to hear from them?

Oh Please make Jesus Christ your hero! Not a mere man!

Yes! Give me a raggedy poor pastor who labors on his knees and preaches the full gospel. Give me a man who loves Christ so much that he forgoes popularity and celebrity and book deals to labor in the fields that are white. You will never hear from these men their message is offensive to the masses. The real gospel divides.

Contagious: "I wish that before we decided to use this blog as our forum to post all of our frustrations and unproven dirty laundry we would all pray and ask Christ for discernment. Let us be quick to love and slow to condemn"

My friend, the one thing we conveniently forget is that rebuking is also loving.

To begin to respond,

Is Junior Hill in the ministry for a popularity contest? Is Johnny Hunt? Who on the list of speakers at the pastor conference are in the ministry for popularity or book sales? I am not sure if any of you have ever been to one of Jacksonville's Pastors Conference or not, but nearly 95% of attendees at the conference are small church pastors. I have never once felt like I was listening to men who were trying to win a popularity contest.

To resond the comment about having Jesus as my hero, grow up. You know what I mean. If it were not for Men like Dr. Vines an Dr. Criswell, we might not have a Southern Baptist Convention today. These men have given their lives to the preaching, teaching, and furthering of the Gospel. I admire them. Are they perfect? Not at all, we are all sinners. Only Christ is perfect.

I am really grieved that this blog has become so hateful. Brothers, if you do not like the speakers at any conference the best way to show your disaproval is to not attend. If you would like to hear your local pastor at a confernce, then by all means start a conference. If you google pastor conference I am sure that you will find more conferences than you could imagine, with serveral speakers. As I said also, the Pastors Conference this year has some new speakers.

I undestand the frustration with our Convention, but I think we would both agree that this last year has shown a lot of changes. I will also say that arguing these issues here will do nothing to help us fix the problems in our convention.

Esther,

I am not following a man. I am not really sure where that comment came from. It's really odd to me that a lot of people that are posting on this blog have no respect for the position of the Pastorate. I understand that Pastor Gaines has made some mistakes, and I am not here to say wether or not he should be allowed to stay there as Pastor. The hurt that you have all experienced does not give you the right to gossip or defame any pastors character. Being led by a pastor does not mean you are following a man, it means you are submitting to God and following His man. I am so sorry that so many of you have been hurt. If no one else apologizes I will.
