This article from the Nashville Scene by Elizabeth Ulrich takes a long, hard look at the problem of sexual abuse in the SBC and the SBC leadership's continuing refusal to deal with the problem.
It seemed likely last summer when the SBC voted to appoint a committee to "study" the problem that it was little more than a means of temporarily appeasing the critics while those in leadership continue to turn a blind eye to the problem. And now... it sounds as if that really is all there was to it.
SBCOutpost has a discussion of the article here.
February 18th: New article in the Nashville Scene.
Update: Paige Patterson is scheduled to preach at Bellevue Sunday morning, February 17th. Steve Gaines is scheduled to speak at the SWBTS chapel on April 17th. If it bothers you that these men, who have willfully ignored the problem of pedophile/sexual predator ministers in the SBC, are continuing to make the lucrative speaking circuit rounds, then let your voice be heard! Contact the media in Memphis and the SBC. This seems to be the SBC's answer to the problem -- a single page of links to outside agencies and resources.

And while you're at it, you may want to drop a line to the pastor and pastor of students of the church that PW now is reported to be attending and ask them just how certain they are that their women and children are safe!

Boy, that's not a very nice thing for an angel to call someone! I'm crushed. I thought you wanted only "the best" for us "guys and gals." {sniff}
"Nass...why are we reading his silly posts?"
Don't you think he's a fine representative for Bellevue? Not lumping the members of Bellevue in with this immature little boy who suffers from a perpetual need to be the center of attention, but he seems to think he somehow "represents" the loyal subjects of Steve.
Or in the infamous words of Forrest Gump, "Stupid is as stupid does." I was just letting him illustrate that concept... and what better way to do so than with his own words?
Angels are not bought by the blood; that merciful grace is bestowed only on fallen humans.

No idea, and I really thought it was "boob." My bad. You really think angels sit around heaven playing spades? Or that an angel sent by God wouldn't know all our names?
Who cares anyway...
we've had a lot more interesting trolls than "Bood"
(yawn)
Nass,
Keep posting. I'm sure that King Steve would be so proud of his lone defender.
I guess our little "angel" must be the "ace" of spades!
Anyone planning to attend the "annual monkey business" meeting at BBC tomorrow? It doesn't matter if you're not still a member -- or even if you've never been a member. You can still vote on all motions! They'll announce that only members can vote, but in practice, we know that doesn't matter, right? At least not if you vote the "right" way and/or if your sister is Donna Gaines.
Will last year's unfinished business -- the motion that was still on the floor when the meeting was adjourned -- finally be put to a vote? Heh heh. Just kidding. The real question is will there be anyone left who has the guts to bring it up?
OC posted a statement.....he asked why can't we just let God love on us a while.
I think He is...by introducing us to friends who will pray for us and talk with us. God's hands, if you will.
bowtheknee, gmommy, and ima: I don't always get Chambers either! However, I have always wondered if God's perfect will was lost in the Garden of Eden.
I've heard the sermons about perfect and permissive will, and I know that when I am doing what I'm supposed to be doing....as Ez said, following scripture.....then things go much better.
Maybe God's Will is being obedient to His Word. However, I still struggle with decisions sometimes, wanting to do what is right.
I guess it's not supposed to be easy.....
Some say that if we live by God's Word, things may go better. But I think maybe not in this world. I'm venturing out to say that if we are being strict to obeying Scripture, then our lives should be terrible right now, and getting worse. I don't know how much "terrible" we can handle, but I'm sure I would not whine to the prophets, or those depicted in the hall of faith in Hebrews 11. They were following His will. I think that if you are comfortable right now, well, you aren't in His will. Uh huh. Uh oh.
But anyway, to obey God is a given. That is expected of us. We are to be living by His "decretive" will. What He has written down and decreed. There is no argument there at all.
But God did not address every single incident that may come up in my life. That is where His "permissive" will enters. He doesn't decree, but even in His sovereignty, He let's us decide.
And it doesn't do any good for any of us to just "skirt" the issue.
So someone doesn't understand Oswald Chambers,(whom I do understand and respect greatly). He did not invent the idea of "permissive will". I'm getting the idea that if we don't know the answer to something, it's just best we just give up and point the finger to someone else.
I believe the Bible to be inerrent. But what the Bible says nothing about, well, I guess the Holy Spirit and me have to figure out. Right?
This "permissive will" thing, it's real, it's in our lives, we need to deal with it, so how do we relate to it?
We deal with it by acknowledging that the Bible does not give answers to every single question related to our lives. In fact, most of our lives must run on bare naked faith. And God honors that. Once we get a grip on that, then what the Scriptures DO address takes on a whole new meaning.
My two cents.
Jussayin.

Guess it's the preacher in me.

I think your comment got lost there by the angel, but right on. I've had to assume an approach which acknowledges the propensity to accentuate self and other, always self and other. We believe that we always have something to defend, and view life from that standpoint; and really, in most cases the battles aren't worth the ostensible gains.
Hope everyone is happy and well this day.
Hey Cakes my friend! Good to hear from you...
yes, some battles aren't worth bleeding for, much less dying on someone else's hill...
I'm getting it... day by day...
But there are those battles in which you must give it your all...
